Darwin Keith Shorters was born May 24, 1972 and is a native of Pontiac, Michigan. He grew up in a single parent “Christian” home with his two siblings, Trabian D. Shorters, Miami, Florida, Shonda C. Shorters,West Bloomfield, Michigan and his mother Charlene Ellison, Bloomfield Hills,Michigan. He is the proud uncle of Jalen and Juwan Moncrief of Pontiac Michigan.
Darwin was formally educated in the Pontiac Public School District. He is very talented and gifted in the area of mathematics. He graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1990 in the top 25% of his graduating class. Darwin was actively involved in many activities in high school, i.e. M3-PEP Program, Computer Science Camp, Houghton Michigan, and Project Upward Bound Program. Darwin was a member of the Pontiac Central Wrestling Team as he served as Team Captain. He also participated on the Homecoming Court, class of 1990.
Darwin pursued a career in Computer Science at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. At Grand Valley State University, Darwin was a recipient of the Bert Price Scholarship Award for minorities’ student pursuing a career in Technology. He received a full academic scholarship. While attending GVSU Darwin joined many organizations, such as the Black Student Union, NAACP, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Greek Council, Order of Omega, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. 1992. Darwin served on the executive board in many of these organizations. He was a member of the Grand Valley State Wrestling Team. Darwin Graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics, 1995.
He entered the work force as entry level Programmer; designing custom software systems, such as inventory tracking systems, payroll systems, shipping,receiving and accounting systems. He used object oriented program languages to create rapid application development tools. Darwin advanced to Systems Analyst for small to mid-size manufacturing companies in which he implemented,customized, and maintained the company’s enterprise resource planning system(MRP). He also was a technical consultant for several industries such as, medical, financial and manufacturing program systems.
Darwin has a love for children and sports. While pursuing his professional career he simultaneously began coaching high school students in sports; which includes football, baseball and wrestling. He was instrumental in motivating many minority males to pursue college careers. Darwin was the advisor/coach for the Pontiac Robotics Team which was in partnership with General Motors Power Train.
Darwin changed the course of his career to become an Educator. He pursued a Masters in the Art of Teaching Degree from Marygrove College. He completed his course work in December, 2010 and will graduate May, 2011.
Darwin took a position in Pontiac Public Schools as a non-certified Instructor. He instructed all areas of Math including Algebra,Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Physics. Darwin was also an instructor in the Computer Labs. He was the System Administrator for the Pearson SuccessMaker, and Plato Learning Systems in the Pontiac School District. He was also a participant in the Technology Enhancement and Assessment grant through Oakland School. Darwin prides himself in being a change agent for youth to look at life, and their potential in a positive way and inspiring them to pursue their dreams.
Currently Mr. Shorters teaches mathematics at St. Johns High School on Johns Island as well as coaching football, wrestling and robotics.
